Freezing Pipe & Smoke Alarm Tips from WFD
The Williamsburg Fire Department has been busy since the last blast of cold temperatures. Since January 1, 2018, the department has responded on more than 40 calls for assistance in locating shut off valves and shut ting off water in both commercial and residential settings. We encourage you to prepare now for the next round of cold temperatures. Take time to locate all of the utilities in your home, this includes your water shutoff valves and electrical panel. If you need assistance identifying these services please contact the Williamsburg Fire Department at 757-220-6220 and a member from the department will assist you.
This is also a great time to check your smoke alarms. Your smoke alarms should be less than 10 years old and they should be checked on a monthly basis by pushing the test button located on the face of the alarm to ensure it is functioning correctly. Batteries should be replaced at a minimum of once a year; however we encourage you to change them twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The Williamsburg Fire Department also offers home safety surveys in residential homes free of charge. The home safety survey helps identify fire and life safety hazards in your home and offers some risk management tips to reduce any identified hazards. If you are interested in having a home safety survey completed, please contact us at 757-220-6220.
