Golden Rules for Garbage Collection:
Residents must provide containers with the restriction of 96 gallons.
Garbage container/s must be out before 7 a.m. on your assigned collection day either Monday or Tuesday. The contractor does not have a set schedule especially due to the weather, mechanical problems, scheduling, and new drivers.
- Containers are required to have lids to deter animal infestation and avoid rain water build up.
Yard Debris - 10 bags of leaves/grass clippings OR ten bundles of sticks/limbs tied with twine or boxed. Stick/limbs must be less than 4 feet in length and 3 inches in diameter. Place curbside without appointment on your assigned collection day.
Household Bulk - By appointment only, items include sofas, chairs, washers/dryers, mattresses, refrigerators. Residents must call the City two days prior to desired pickup. Items must be placed at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on the collection day. Collections are limited to two items per collection with three collections per year. REMODELING OR BUILDING MATERIALS are not allowed for collection. Please call 220-6140 to arrange a bulk pick up.
Jolly Pond Convenience Center - The center is available for residents to dispose of materials not allowed in the household bulk program. Owned and operated by James City County, City residents may utilize the center on a prepurchased coupon basis. The number of coupons required is subject to the size of the load brought to the Center. Coupon booklets sell for $20/5 coupons and can be purchased at both the Williamsburg and James City County Treasurer's Offices. The center is open 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. Another Option - Need to get rid of something but it's not ready for the landfill? Call a charity. Items such as computers, cabinets, paint, building materials, and swing sets can be donated. Some charities will even come to your house and pick up the items. Contact the following charities: Habitat For Humanity 757-596-5553 www.habitat.org, CHKD 757-476-5437, DAV 757-220-0839, and Good Samaritan 757-877-0644.
Household Chemical, Computer and Electronics Collection - Collections are offered every other month February thru October. Items must be taken to the collection site which is held at Lafayette High School 4460 Longhill Road. Items collected include: household maintenance products, including latex and oil-based paints, automotive products, lawn & garden products and household cleaning products. Items not accepted: business or medical waste, compressed gas cylinders, explosives, ammunition or gun powder, shock sensitive materials, radioactive products or household trash. Approved computer/electronic items include: computers and accessories, telephones, cameras, portable radios, stereo equipment, palm pilots, Ipods, MP3 players, video games and consoles, battery back-ups, miscellaneous household electronics. No TVS. Also rechargeable batteries, fluorescent and CFL light bulbs are collected.
