Economic Development

Today, as in Colonial America, Williamsburg is a center of commerce and culture viewed by millions the world over as synonymous with quality and hospitality. Vibrant and cosmopolitan, yet still a small town, Williamsburg offers discerning businesses and families the opportunity to work and live in one of the world's truly special places.

The City of Williamsburg is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the southeast portion of the state, midway between Richmond and Norfolk on the I-64/U.S. 60 corridor. The City is located at 37°15' North latitude, 76°37' West longitude, approximately 6 to 90 feet above sea level.

As of April 2005, the total civilian labor force was 4,827, of which 4,502 were employed and 325 were unemployed. The unemployment rate was estimated at 6.7%.

The City of Williamsburg's local economy is largely supported by tourism, education, and health care. The majority of business establishments within the city either fall into the retail trade or accommodation / food services category. Major employers located in the City include The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, The College of William and Mary, and Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital.

In March, 2004, First Lady Laura Bush designated Williamsburg as a Preserve America community in recognition of its continued preservation of cultural and natural heritage resources.
