2008 Real Estate Tax Deferral Program

Williamsburg Code Section 18-54 allows for the deferral of taxes on real property owned by and occupied as the sole dwelling of persons who are at least 65 years of age or permanently and totally disabled, subject to certain income and net worth limitations. City Council recently approved reducing the interest rate charged on deferred taxes to two (2) percent annually. The total taxes and interest charges are not due until the death of the owner or the property is sold.

Income limits for Fiscal Year 2008 are:

4 Person                    $60,900                      8 Person                    $80,400

Net financial worth as of December 31, 2006 may not exceed $215,250, excluding the value of the dwelling and the land, not exceeding ten acres.

City staff members are available to answer questions and assist with the application process:

  1. In the Assessor’s Office in the Municipal Building at 401 Lafayette Street during regular office hours – Monday-Friday – 8:00am to 4:30pm;
  2. By calling the Assessor’s Office at 757-220-6185;

 

Completed applications, including required attachments, are due in the Assessor’s Office by Monday, December 3, 2007.
