Department Structure

The Williamsburg Fire Department is a combination career and volunteer department. The career staff consists of 35 members divided among administrative staff and suppression personnel. Suppression personnel are assigned to 3 platoons of ten members per platoon. Each shift is comprised of a Battalion Chief, a Lieutenant, a Fire Inspector and several Paramedic/Firefighters, with the remainder made up of Firefighter/EMT's. Additionally, Monday - Friday, 8am-4:30 pm there is a EMS Supervisor Captain and a Fire Protection Specialist Captain.

The Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief, the EMS Supervisor Captain, and the Fire Protection Specialist Captian have the additional duties of Emergency Management Team. This team is tasked with the responsibility for preparation, maintenance and execution of the city's emergency operation Plan The Emergency Operations Center is located adjacent to the fire administration offices.

The Fire Chief is also a sworn fire marshal and one senior fire inspector serves a deputy fire marshal with police powers. This structure allows the department to conduct arson investigations and arrests without placing the burdon on the Police Department.

Services provided include: fire suppression, ALS-EMS delivery which includes a bike medical team, fire prevention, HazMat response, technical rescue, city-wide safety, and emergency management.

The department also maintains a volunteer unit consisting of 25 members that serve the city, add financial support and fire ground support. This unit has an officer structure that reports to the career Fire Chief.
