TRANSPORTING OUR CHILDREN SAFELY

Getting Started
The first step is to select a member of your staff to implement the program. This person will be the central contact for your department. Their responsibilities include attending the Train-the-Trainer workshop, developing a department-wide training schedule, establishing guidelines for implementing the Child Safety Seat Program within your department, and serving as a liaison with the media and the general public.

Train - The - Trainer
Your contact person and at least two other members of your staff will attend this 16 hour workshop. This workshop emphasizes hands-on training and experience with different types of child safety seats and their proper installation. Participants will return from the workshop prepared to train other members of your department. The workshops are scheduled on a regional basis.

Back At The Station
Once your trainers have completed the training, they should develop a schedule and train the remaining staff. You have the flexibility to develop a schedule that fits the specific demands of your department. While the training is being conducted, you should develop your plan to implement the program in your area.

Establishing Your Hours
Now you should decide the hours during which the public can come to your location for a safety seat inspection. You will probably want to keep the hours uniform within your department. Safety seat inspections can take place daily, weekly, or monthly. In addition to inviting the public to your stations, you can take Child Safety Seat Program into the community by hosting inspections in mall, grocery or retail store parking lots. Once you establish your hours, they must be publicized.
