The Colonial Capitol
As the capital of Great Britain's largest and most prosperous colony from 1699 to 1780, Williamsburg was a political training ground for the Virginians who helped lead America to Independence.
Today, Colonial Williamsburg is a 173 acre living history museum portraying 18th-century life--from busy taverns and shops to horse drawn carriages and costumed interpreters who recreate the early social, economic, and political climate. Historical Interpreters use the settings of restored and reconstructed buildings, gardens and greens to demonstrate 18th-century technology, and to relate the issues and concerns of daily life for free and enslaved Virginians on the eve of the American Revolution. Some Character Interpreters portray actual 18th-century residents, from slaves to Thomas Jefferson.
The City of Williamsburg and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation welcome you to our historic city. Each year we host more than 1,000,000 visitors who come to see this important site where a diverse group of people helped shape a new nation. More than one hundred thousand school children from around the country are among these visitors. Teachers find the Historic Area to be an ideal place for on-site learning experiences. We ask group leaders and chaperons to help maintain a quality experience for both residents and visitors by treating everyone they encounter with respect.
We appreciate your assistance in maintaining the peaceful 18th-century ambience by using designated drop-off and pick-up points briefly, and parking in a designated bus area while your group tours Colonial Williamsburg.
