At his State of the City address on November 18, 2010, Mayor Haulman announced the appointment of a focus group with representatives from City boards and commissions, citizens, business owners and City staff to develop a vision for the Northeast Triangle area of the City, an approximately 565 acre area  encompassed by Capitol Landing Road, Merrimac Trail, Second Street and Penniman Road (download map).

The Focus Group is charged to prepare a vision statement which paints a narrative and graphic picture of expectations and recommendations for the future of the Northeast Triangle Focus Area, including:

  • Future land use designations
  • Relations to surrounding areas in and outside of the City
  • Transportation connections
  • Design expectations for corridors and open spaces
  • Economic development and business opportunities
  • Redevelopment priorities and architectural character
  • Character and scale of housing and neighborhoods, and
  • Community life and recreational opportunities

The Focus Group is included in the 2011-2012 Biennial Goals, Initiatives & Outcomes (GIOs), and the vision statement will be completed by December 2011 for use in the City's updated Comprehensive Plan in 2012.
