Very hot weather is predicted this week. Please remember to limit your exposure and activity levels and to check on your neighbors. There are two programs that can be of assistance to people in need:
1. The City is accepting Cooling Assistance Applications through Wednesday, August 15, 2012, as part of the Virginia Department of Social Services' (VDSS) Energy Assistance Program. Types of available cooling assistance include: Purchase or replace and install an air conditioner; Repair a central air conditioning unit or heat pump; Payment of an electric utility security deposit; and Payment of the electric bill to operate the cooling equipment.
Assistance is available to households with a child under 6-years-old, a person with disabilities, or an adult age 60 or older living in the home who meet the program's income and eligibility requirements. To find out if you qualify, visit the VDSS website. (Download Fact Sheet)

2. The Peninsula Agency on Aging is offering fans for those in need through Fan Care 2012, sponsored by Dominion Virginia Power. To be eligible, individuals must be 60 years of age or older, have a situation at home that threatens their health, and must meet certain household income requirements.
