Volunteer Fire Department

The Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD), founded in 1754, has served the Williamsburg community for the past two hundred and fifty-seven years. As a non-profit organization, they depend upon private donations as their primary source of funding.

Services

Working in conjunction with the career firefighters and rescue personnel of the City of Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department provides emergency fire and ambulance services to the citizens and businesses of the Williamsburg area, the members of the College community, and visitors to Colonial Williamsburg. During the year, the Williamsburg Fire Department responds to roughly 4,000 fire and emergency medical calls. Our volunteers contribute more than 10,000 man-hours to this effort.

The Volunteer Fire Department uses the funds donated by the public to purchase equipment, including protective clothing for its members, medical supplies and equipment, support vehicles and apparatus.

The members of the Volunteer Department work and train alongside the career firefighters on a daily basis, as well as perform their own monthly training exercises as a department.
