Part Failure Caused Wastewater Overflow; Pump Station Is Operating

An investigation into a wastewater overflow at Pump Station 10 has determined the cause to be a part failure at the pump.

A City of Williamsburg Public Works & Utilities employee discovered the overflow the morning of Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, upon arriving at the pump station, located near Monticello Avenue and the William & Mary School of Education driveway, to conduct a routine water sample.

Public Works & Utilities crews stopped and contained the overflow by mid-morning Monday. Williamsburg Fire Department laid booms in College Creek to help with containment. The subsequent investigation has found that much of the wastewater landed on the wide floodplain of College Creek. Investigation into the wastewater amount spilled is ongoing.

Upon discovery of the overflow, the City of Williamsburg contacted the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Department of Health and, due to the proximity to the university, William & Mary.
