City of Williamsburg to Host Drug Take Back Event

The Williamsburg Police Department will host a Drug Take Back Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, in the parking lot of the Municipal Building, 401 Lafayette St.

Bring any expired or unused prescription or over-the-counter medication, including those that contain controlled substances, to be safely and securely gathered and disposed of. Sharps containers will be available for the disposal of sharps or needles. All medications dropped off during this event will be destroyed.

It is a drive-through event, so participants do not need to exit their vehicles.

The City’s participation is part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take Back Initiative, which aims to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths by providing people with an opportunity to dispose of unused or expired medications. Studies show that the majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

If you cannot make it to this event, there are other safe ways to dispose of unused medications safely. Both the Riverside Doctors; Hospital and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center have collection locations. In the City, Walgreens and CVS offer this service, as do other pharmacies so check with yours.

The Williamsburg Police Department has a limited supply of safe disposal kits at the police station for small amounts of medication as well. Please dispose of your unused medication safely.
