The City of Williamsburg Fire Department responded to a report of smoke from a residential structure on the 700 block of Hamilton Street at approximately 9:41 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2023.
An off-duty firefighter arrived on scene at 9:42 a.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the roof, knocked on the door to make sure no one was home, and contacted dispatch to upgrade the fire to a working structure fire. On-duty personnel arrived at 9:43 a.m.
Crews marked the fire under control at 11 a.m. Firefighters remain on scene to conduct salvage and overhaul operations. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
No injuries were reported; one cat was rescued from the dwelling and transported to a local veterinarian for evaluation. Two occupants have been displaced by the fire and are being assisted by family members.
James City County Fire Department and York County Department of Fire & Life Safety, Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department, and Williamsburg Police assisted on this call. The response included approximately 34 fire personnel and four police personnel.
