Public Technology Institute Honors City of Williamsburg’s Resident Cybersecurity Training

The City of Williamsburg won a top information technology (IT) award for its Resident Cybersecurity Training program.

CompTIA, the nonprofit association for the IT industry and workforce, and the Public Technology Institute (PTI) awarded the Resident Cybersecurity Training program with a 2023 Solutions Award, winning in the category of Web Services, E-Government, Public Outreach and Mobile Apps for localities with a population under 50,000.

The City launched the Resident Cybersecurity Training program, a free program that teaches residents how to raise their awareness of cybersecurity threats, in February 2023. The program uses a course from KnowBe4, an industry leader in helping organizations train employees about internet security risks in the workplace. The Resident Cybersecurity Training focuses on home internet security threats.

“Though many people receive some cybersecurity training at their workplace, not everyone has that opportunity,” Chief Information Officer Mark Barham said. “We launched a free program that is accessible to any City of Williamsburg resident interested in learning how to identify and prevent cybersecurity threats. Our community will be safer because of it.”

City of Williamsburg residents can fill out an interest form to participate in the Resident Cybersecurity Training program at williamsburgva.gov/cybersecurity.

The annual PTI Solutions Awards program recognizes member cities and counties that have developed or deployed innovative technology solutions within the past 15 months that positively affected local government performance and service to the communities.

“Local governments are under a lot of pressure to improve efficiencies and empower their teams to better serve residents and businesses,” said Dr. Alan Shark, vice president of public sector and executive director of CompTIA PTI. “This year’s winners show how forward-looking local government leaders can leverage innovative thinking with technologies to improve their communities.”
