UPDATE (4 p.m.): Monticello Avenue is now open. The sewer main line has been repaired.

-----

A sewer main break has occurred on Monticello Avenue near Compton Drive.

The northbound lane of Monticello Avenue, for traffic heading into the City, has been closed between Ironbound Road and Compton Drive. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area as crews from the City of Williamsburg's Department of Public Works & Utilities and Fire Department assess and contain the overflow.

The work is expected to take up to six hours.

The cause of the break and quantity of the overflow, which has caused an odor in the area, is not yet known.

The Williamsburg Police Department is on scene to control traffic in the area.
