The Criminal Investigations Bureau is under the command of Major Ed Schneider. The investigative units that comprise the Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau are responsible for the follow-up investigation of crimes committed against persons or property in the City of Williamsburg, which require a degree of specialization or a centralized investigative approach. All major criminal investigations that are undertaken by the Williamsburg Police Department are conducted by investigators assigned to this Bureau. The investigators are dedicated to investigating these crimes, collecting evidence, identifying perpetrators and preparing cases for successful prosecution. They also fulfill the duties of conducting background checks for prospective employees.  The Property and Evidence Control function of the police department falls under the control the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

The Bureau is under the command of a major and assisted by the lieutenant.  Six investigators are broken into teams to more effectively investigate the incidents.  Two investigators are assigned crimes against persons, two investigate property crimes and special victims. The last two investigators are allocated to the Tri-Rivers Task Force to investigate narcotics violations.   Each team works with the other teams as well as the uniform patrol officers to assist in any investigations that may be ongoing.
