NEW Garbage Collection Update – As of June 1, 2020, Garbage Truck Drivers will step out of the truck to manually pick up bags or bundles of sticks outside of your cart. Per the policy, only 10 bags or 10 bundles of sticks are allowed. If there is room in your cart, please fill to the top.  Miscellaneous items such as appliances or furniture must be scheduled for collection. Collection Day Calendar (ReCollect)

Enter your address to view your collection days for garbage, recycling and leaf collection.

Garbage Collection

  • Residents must use their City provided garbage cart--gray with BLUE lid. 
  • Do not leave your cart at the curb after collection.
  • Place cart at the curb before 7 a.m. on your assigned collection day (Monday or Tuesday) with the lid opening facing the street and placed 3 ft. away from other carts, parked cars, utility poles, trees and bushes.
  • Trucks are automated, place all garbage in your cart. Items outside of the cart will not be collected. 
  • Cart sizes are 35 and 65 gallons.
  • If physically unable to place cart at the curb, fill out a BACKYARD GARBAGE COLLECTION REQUEST and return to Public Works Department for review.
Yard Debris

 

  • On your assigned garbage collection day (Monday or Tuesday) residents are also allowed to place at the street 10 bags of leaves/grass clippings OR 10 bundles of sticks/limbs tied with twine or boxed.
  • Leaf bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds. 
  • Sticks/limbs must be less than 4 feet in length and 3 inches in diameter.  
CURBSIDE LEAF COLLECTION

 

  • Free leaf collection from November through st week in January.
  • Crews vacuum leaves raked to the curb.  Remove trash or sticks from leaf piles. 
  • Please do not rake into the street.  Leaves clog storm drains and pollute our waterways.
  • Red and Blue Routes receive 5 collections. 
  • Print the 2019 Leaf Schedule  Leaf Collection 2019 has concluded. 
  • If you miss leaf collection, leaves can be bagged (10 bag limit) and placed at the curb for the garbage company to collect on your garbage day. 
  • Christmas trees are usually collected on the first two Mondays in January - dates to be determined for 2020. Please remove lights and decorations.  Your tree must be at the curb before 7 am on these dates.       
Recycling    

 

  • Recycling is collected on your garbage day (Monday or Tuesday) every other week.
  • Print 2020 Recycling Schedule
  • Residents must use their City provided recycling cart--gray with TAN lid.
  • Do not leave your cart at the curb after collection.
  • Place cart at the curb before 7 a.m. on your scheduled day with the lid opening facing the street and placed 3 ft. away from other carts, parked cars, utility poles, trees and bushes.
  • Items do not have to be separated.  Please do not place recyclables in plastic bags.
  • Trucks are automated, all recyclables must be in your cart. Items outside of your cart will not be picked up.  
  • Cart sizes are 35, 65, and 95 gallons.  
  • If physically unable to place cart at the curb, fill out a FRONT PORCH RECYCLING COLLECTION REQUEST and return to the Public Works Department for review.
BUSINESS RECYCLING

 

  • The City does not provide business recycling services. Businesses must contract services directly with a recycling hauler (see list below) or take recyclables to the Tewning Road Convenience Center located at 117 Tewning Road.  It is free to use the center.

  • Shared recycling center for Williamsburg and James City County residents.
  • Recycling option for businesses.
  • Hours:  Monday 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Closed on Sunday.

Household Bulk    

 

  • By appointment only call 757-220-6140 to schedule.
  • Must schedule 2 business days prior to regular trash collection day.
  • Place items at the curb before 7 a.m. on your assigned collection day.
  • Collections are limited to 2 large items per collection and 3 collections per year.
  • Examples of bulk items include a sofa, chair, washer, dryer or mattress.  
  • REMODELING/BUILDING MATERIALS OR CAR PARTS ARE NOT ALLOWED.  This includes any type of wood.
Jolly Pond Convenience Center

 

  • 1204 Jolly Pond Road, Williamsburg.
  • Open 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. seven days a week
  • The landfill is owned and operated by James City County but City residents  are allowed.  There is a charge to use the landfill which can be paid in two ways - pre-purchased coupons or credit card on site.  NO CASH. 
  • Coupon booklets are available at the City Williamsburg or James City County Treasurer's offices for $20/5 coupons.  Number of coupons is subject to size of the load.

Household Chemical collections & Computer Recycling

 

  • Acceptable items: household maintenance products including paints, automotive products, lawn & garden products and household cleaning products.  Desktop and laptop computers, servers, computer monitors, cell phones, computer wiring, desktop printers and scanners.  Also rechargeable batteries, fluorescent and CFL light bulbs are collected. 
  • Not Accepted: business or medical waste, compressed gas cylinders, explosives ammunition or gun powder, shock sensitive materials, radioactive products or household trash.  No electronics.  No TVS.
  • If you miss the Williamsburg HHC collections, Williamsburg residents are allowed to drop off items at other local collections.  Print a schedule 2020 HHC Schedule or see dates below.
