The Williamsburg Fire Prevention Office focuses on educating the community about the benefits of proper safety practices and identifying and eliminating a variety of hazardous conditions that pose a threat to life, property, and the environment. This proactive approach has limited the number of fires and other devastating events that could have transpired in the city.

The Office of Fire Prevention is headed by Captain James B. Humphrey, a sworn fire marshal who has been employed by the city for nearly thirty-five years. Captain Humphrey is a forty hour employee who supervises a staff of two fire marshals and one inspector. The inspectors and fire marshals are responsible for enforcing the Virginia Fire Code, as well as City Code.
